Behind the scenes of I-D Bohemia
Whilst we have enjoyed sharing the other 5 Designs for Monogram Dinner By Design Calgary recently, it was about time that we shared some behind the scenes of I-D Bohemia. This post is a great insight into the amount of design, planning and the high quality work that goes into an I-D Bohemia experience!
Christina of I-D Bohemia wiring the lighting for the chandelier that she designed (I saw the engineering drawing she produced!). She had a metal supplier cut the aluminum bars to size before she loaded and transported all the elements to the event site. Though I was there to cover the before, during, and after of the build, I decided to get involved with the build. You see those metal pieces? I shined each one of them by hand and filed the metal burrs off before more of Christina’s team started assembling them into a massive chandelier. It was so massive that you could walk inside it…… and needed several people to lift it into position!
Christina’s design also included these “see through” glass oil candles on the table. They were so cool! The “candles” were embedded in over 200 kg of salt which formed peaks on the tabletop.Lindsey polishing the floor in her finery with such joy haha.Christina putting final touches to the experience.Detail images of the chandelier hanging in place. Imagine of the amount of hammering and shining that had to happen to build this on site. Are you exhausted just thinking about it? We were when we putting it together, but we were and are so impressed with Christina’s vision and seeing it come to life.A Globe & Mail Photographer popped by to take a photo of Christina; here’s the image he took.Wes’ Blue Steel pose caused everyone to burst into laughter. I asked Christina to ham it up for me and she gave me this gem of a pose hahahaha. Kinga took this photo of Christina and I.
Christina also built the wooden base for the vintage mirror and acrylic-topped table. We have worked with Christina several times previously but had no idea that she actually builds elements from scratch on site. Also built on site, the 12 ft or so archway that Christina designed and then commissioned a carpenter to build there.
So excited to share the details of the concept and the final design in next week’s blog post.
