A few years ago, we took family portraits of Nayeli, Alex, & Eliseo during winter. Recently, Alex decided to get a major haircut done by Yvette; it was major for her because she realized that her husband of 9 years and her daughter had never seen her natural hair texture. As a fellow black woman, I understood how much of a big deal this was for her. Additionally, as a fellow Mom, I was deeply appreciative how much it means for Alex to be able to say to her daughter, Nayeli, that “all hair is good hair”. Our conversation inspired these Alexander Circle Glenora Mom & Daughter portraits. It was a lovely bonus that we got to enjoy all the fall colours during this session!
Alex’s former look can be seen here, and I, wholeheartedly agree that “all hair is good hair”; Alex was a beautiful person, inside & outside, with long “relaxed” hair, she is just as beautiful with her short and naturally textured hair. Her family adore & support her, regardless of outward appearances. I am so grateful to call this lady a friend.
If you are unaware of the concept of “good” versus “bad” hair, you need to watch Comedian Chris Rock’s movie “Good Hair” specifically about African-American hair culture but which believe mirrors my understanding of black hair culture in general.
In my own black hair experience, for most of my childhood up until I was 15 years old, I had my natural afro texture and was nicknamed “Afro Puffs” by my school friends who were incredulous that my parents had not chemically treated my hair. My Mom didn’t chemically treat her hair till she was in her 30s. I decided to stop “relaxing” my hair over 4 years ago after I read The Science of Black Hair: A comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy and wanted to live a more natural hair life. With the help of Yvette of Yves Salon in North Glenora, it has been amazing. Coincidentally, the first time Alex and I met was at Yves Salon! Yvette is an amazing Hair Stylist who has over 20 years of experience styling, cutting, generally taking of her clients’ tresses for all types of hair, not only textured hair.
What’s your hair story? I wanna know. Feel free to share in the comment section!
