We were still based in the UK in fall 2008 when Adrian proposed on bended knees in the gardens of one of West Sussex’s historic buildings (go ahead, insert your “awws” here hehe).
Though our wedding was not happening till Mid May 2009, we started our search in January 2009. Even back then, we knew that we wanted to shop locally for our wedding rings. So we returned to London’s Covent Garden and visited Harry Orkin & Anna Grass of Designer Jewellers. They had made my engagement ring. We loved that all their jewelry is hand-made in gold or silver or a combination of both. We loved the quiet elegance of the jewelry with its clean lines and simple shapes.
Just as well as we knew that our lifestyles would be better suited to such jewelry. Let me explain: Adrian didn’t wear much jewelry in general and I knew that a massive rock would not be conducive to my inclination to rub my eyes with the back of my hands (Can you tell that I don’t wear makeup often??!). Adrian chose a square ring as it was the most comfortable for his non-jewelry preference. It was very much a case of be true to yourself. Honesty is best policy haha. When we visited Harry & Anna, we informed them of our budget and they were able to make our rings specifically for us after they had advised of the different metals and Diamonds.
Walking down memory lane to May 14th 2009, we remember confusing our Vicar during our wedding rehearsal with 3 rings for me, Funmi – top is Diamond & silver engagement ring, bottom 2 are my silver wedding rings. Adrian only has one square silver ring.
You probably wonder the reason for 2 wedding rings, just as our Vicar asked; it was merely because I prefer the thickness of one thicker ring but the comfort of two thinner rings. Yep, go figure.
Our Vicar was happy (if a bit bemused) with the explanation and carried on with blessing mine & Adrian’s wedding rings. Our wedding happened the following day without anymore confusion. You can see some more of our engagement ceremony & wedding images on our About page.
In summary, these were the steps for how we chose our wedding rings if you would like to adopt them: start early, be true to yourself in terms of your budget, principles & preferences then enjoy your rings!
