“On June 27-28, 2024, the National African Descent Youth (NADY) Summit took place in Edmonton, bringing together young delegates to tackle issues facing African descent communities. The NADY Summit was a high-energy 2-day event tailored for Black youth, aged 15 to 30, and allies from all over Canada. The event aimed to tackle big questions like “Who We Are,” “How We Live,” and “Where We Are Going” through lively discussions, interactive workshops, and roundtables. The summit was extremely important as it not only discussed big issues like racism, discrimination, and the fight for representation with Black youth, but also equipped them with practical skills, knowledge, and networking opportunities to help them break through those barriers.
The event was a resounding success, with keynotes from the Chair of the Department of African Studies at Howard University, Dr. Mohamed S. Camara, Women Empowerment Leader Sophie Jama Malindi, and Founder-CEO of La Connexional Ivan Ngandjui Touko, setting an empowering tone for discussions on social justice, economic empowerment, educational equity, healthcare advocacy and civic engagement. Participants engaged in discussions, addressing systemic racism and gaining skills in community organizing, digital advocacy, and leadership.
This summit would not have been possible without funders and sponsors such as the Prairies Economic Development of Canada, Heritage Canada, the Government of Alberta, the Black Opportunity Fund, Edmonton Heritage Council, Dr Bukola Salami, as well as partners and vendors such as CM Events, Targetxx Video Production, FO Photography, PictureIt Rentals and xperience360.” – Tinu Olabimtan of African Canadian Civic Engagement Council.
Working with ACCEC for NADY Summit was a highlight for me – the event was wonderful and thought-provoking AND they are actually used the photos immediately on the NADY Summit website. This brings me so much joy. I mean, just look at how they organized and shared all the images on the NADY Summit gallery page!
