Nellie McClung Girls Junior High’s Pink Tea 2015

{October 16, 2015}

Last Friday, we covered Nellie McClung Girls Junior High‘s Pink Tea 2015. This event was to commemorate the anniversary of “Persons Day“, October 18. On that day in 1929, a landmark decision changed the face of Canadian politics. Women were declared “persons” under the law and were granted the right to be appointed to the Senate.

Grade 9 students of Nellie McClung Girls Junior High hosted “The Pink Tea”, a tradition developed over a century ago when women throughout the British Empire – including Canada – used pink teas to engender solidarity among female “suffragists”. Their teacher, Marjorie Carter organized it. Historically, these gatherings were an essential forum for women to organize and strategize on the pursuit of women’s rights. This event was so important in the lead up to the federal election on October 19, 2015. Though these 15 year olds can’t vote yet, they could start learning about the importance of the voting system and indeed, aspire to be candidates to be voted for in due course.

“Alberta’s Famous Five:Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy, and Irene Parlby – helped guarantee that women are represented in all levels of Canadian politics. The legacy of strong, education female representation continues through the leadership example of this historical group. They have inspired generations of women.”

The Pink Tea featured the following Premier Notley message to Nellie McClung Girls Junior HighMayor Don Iveson’s message toNellie McClung Pink Tea, and Councillor Bev Esslinger message to Pink Tea 2015. The Keynote Speaker was Laurie Blakeman.
