Roasted Peanuts | Epa

So everyone who knows me, Funmi, knows that I have a certain love for Roasted Peanuts. I’m not talking about the wanna-bes that have lots of different flavours – peppered, honeyed and other exotic seasonings that you can think of. Nah. No way, Jose. I refer to plain roasted Peanuts, also known as “Epa” in Yorubaland, Nigeria. The kind that where sold in glass bottles in Lagos markets or by road hawkers taking advantage of the terrible traffic jams. The kind that my sisters & I spent many a light- (by “light”, I mean all kinds of electricity)deprived evening deskinning using candle light after roasting the raw Peanuts in gas oven. O roasted Peanuts, how I lurrrvee thee, especially when served with Garri.

Just to show that my palate is really quite refined, despite the tribute above, just check this collection of images from the elegant event that I covered at Harrods and Jumeirah Carlton Tower back in February this year.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, it’s because my darling Husband, Adrian, who didn’t experience the joy of candle-lit deskinning whilst telling stories to pass the enforced downtime, thanks to the rather unreliable power supply in Lagos when I was growing up there, annd had previously said he didn’t like peanuts, changed his mind. Wanna guess what caused this change of mind? I roasted raw Peanuts myself after getting so fed up of the selection of flavoured roasted and over-salted varieties offered in UK supermarkets.

The winning recipe, if you can call it that, was simply spread raw Peanuts on a baking tray and roast in a 180 Degrees Celsius oven for 18 mins. Let it cool for 10 minutes before rubbing the roasted Peanuts between your fingers to deskin them. Enjoy them responsibly. The last instruction is one that I force myself to adhere to as normal behaviour for me when it comes to roasted Peanuts is more akin to that of the Cookie Monster. They really are that tasty!

Wow! I roasted Peanuts today and I may well have it Garri and water several times this week after this story! Fellow readers who know what I am talking about, do roasted Peanuts make you feel the same way? Have you been irritated by the selection provided in UK supermarkets? Tell us what you think.
